About the Novel A Hope in the Unseen- Teacher Prompted

A high school experience is different for people in the same school, let alone for two very different people, in two very different schools, and in two very different cities.  My personal experiences are incredibly different from the experiences, portrayed in A Hope in the Unseen, of Cedric Jennings.

The author, of A Hope in the Unseen, explains that Cedric long ago learn the lesson that at his school "distinctiveness can be dangerous, so it's best to develop an attitude for not being noticed."  At his school, good academics are not something that is accepted or something that you would want noticed by other students. The school does not offer very many harder courses or extracurricular academic activities. Cedric in spite of that wants to get the top grades and to go to an Ivy League school.

Cedric’s school is filled with drugs and violence. This allows the school to become unsafe and a darker environment for the students. It also pushes the students to become more street smart, than they normally would be.  Ballou Senior High, Cedric’s school, also does not have much diversity in its student population, which is mainly of the poorer class African American.  Cedric has had a difficult high school experience.

My high school experience is filled with trying to do the best that I can in the classes that I take. At my high school, getting good grades is not a bad thing as it is at Cedric’s school. Most people, including myself, want to be able to go to college, wherever that might be. My school offers many extracurricular activities and many hard courses to take throughout your high school experience.

While Cedric’s school is filled with crime, my school is not being overrun with it.  My school has had issues with violence but nothing compared to Cedric’s experiences with it. It is not something that happens regularly. We have a greater diversity at my school with many religious beliefs and many ethnicities. I have had a hard academic experience but have not had the major crime issues that consumed Ballou Senior High.

Cedric’s high school experience was very different from mine. While we both placed an importance on getting good grades and getting into college that is as far as our similarities go. He has a harder background then I do.

Holidays: Top 7 Novels that I Want

Top 7 Novels that I want to get for the Holidays:

1.      Notorious Nineteen is written by Janet Evanovich. This novel is the nineteenth novel of the Stephanie Plum series. The first novel has recently been made into a movie, One for Your Money, which is what got me hooked to this series and the characters.  The Stephanie Plum novels are funny, have some romance, and have great mystery to them. I am in absolute love with this series. If I get any novels for the holidays, this is the one novel I must get.

2.      The Shattered Dark is written by Sandy Williams.  I really was entertained by the first novel, The Shadow Reader, it was a great start to the series. I look forward to seeing how the main character’s relationships develop in the next novel. Hopefully things will start to get better for her.

3.      The Blood Before Sunrise is written by Amanda Bonilla. Darian, the main character, is a character that you can easily empathize with. I think that may be a reason I liked the first novel so much. I hope to learn more about the characters and their abilities. I look forward to a bit of romance and the building on to the characters. I also hope to see Darian getting over her isolated beginnings.

4.      The Mage in Black is written by Jaye Wells. In the first novel, the saying that every story has two sides, persists throughout the plotline. The main character was stuck between too opposing powerful societies. She has to figure out what side she is going to have to fight for and which she will fight with. Now that she has chosen her side at the end of the first novel, I am looking forward to seeing what comes next for her and how she adapts to her new surroundings.

5.      The Blood of Dawn is written by Tami Dane. During first two novels, Sloane’s, the main character, personal life is rather crazy and complicated. I hope that in the next novel Sloane starts to fix and make her personal life not so complex. The Sloane Skye series is of the genre paranormal crime.

6.      The Sliver of Shadow is written by Allison Pang. Abby discovers that she has an incredibly powerful and rare ability at the end of the first novel. Her boyfriend, Brystion, also leaves at the end of the first novel. I look forward to seeing Abby grow into her newfound power and abilities and hopefully fix her relationship with Brystion.

7.      The Vengeful Dead is written by J. N. Duncan.  The main character discovered the existence of vampires in Deadworld. She also lost her best friend, her partner of the law, and her rock, Laurel. In Vengeful Dead, I want Jackie, the main character, to fully accept her friend’s death, to move on in her life, and to let go of her haunting past.

I'm Back

I am finally starting my posting back up. This week, I was planning on reviewing the two novels that I mentioned the last time I posted, Abandon and Magic to the Bone, but I ended up deciding to review those two novels next week in the first week of December. This week I will, instead, have a post based on a question prompted by my AP Lang teacher, and then I will also make a list of the top few novels that I want for the holidays. I know I have not updated the list, about my top five novels that I want, in a while, so I will post the update for the list, either in the next two weeks or in the first few weeks of January.
