Red- Headed Stepchild review

The novel Red- Headed Stepchild was written by Jaye Wells. The Red- Headed Stepchild was published in 2009. It is the first novel in a supernatural series. This series has a variety of supernatural creature, including vampires, mages, faeries, and demons. The series is called Sabine Kane.

This novel has drama, has supernatural cultures and creatures, and has romance.  A lot of the drama comes from family drama. The main character, Sabine Kane, is half vampire and half mage. She has only ever known her vampire side of her family. The vampire leader is her grandmother and she told Sabine her mage half did not want her.  The family drama is very complex. Sabine has been lied to by her vampire half and they have belittled Sabine her entire life.  At the end of the novel, she goes off to join the mages, who have opened her eyes to the vampires’ lies.

The supernatural creatures, the mages and vampires, are on the edge of war. Peace has always been shaky between the two species and now that war is coming, Sabine has to pick her side. At the start of the novel, she thought she would side with the vampires one hundred percent. As she starts to learn more about her families past, about her parents and about what the vampires are doing, she realizes she is on the wrong side of the coming war. She realizes she wants to try to see what the mages are like and that is at the very end of the novel. I really can not wait to read about Sabine and the mages in the second novel.  I want to read about how Sabine’s relationship is with her other side of the family.

There is romance in the Red- Headed Stepchild, at least the beginnings of romance. The romance has started between the main characters, Sabine and Adam. Adam is a mage and wants to teach Sabine how to control and to be a mage. Adam seems good for Sabine, but the next novel should tell more. He reveals Sabine’s family’s past to her and helps her learn that mages are not evil people. At the end of the novel, Adam is taking her to see her mage family.

I would recommend this novel to those that enjoy drama, a little bit of romance, and the paranormal.  I was very entertained by the Red- Headed Stepchild and can not wait to read the second novel.

Blood Law review

Blood Law was written by the author, Jeannie Holmes. This novel is in the supernatural crime genre. It was published in 2010. Blood Law is the first in the Alexandra Sabian series.

This novel has crime, has dark aspects, has the supernatural, has betrayal and has romance. The romance in the novel is between the main characters, Alexandra Sabian and Varik Baudelaire. Varik Baudelaire is Alex’s ex- fiancĂ© and when he comes back into town old feelings spark up again.  Varik is made to be overprotective, way older than Alex, and handsome. Alex and Varik are both vampires and work as an enforcer. An enforcer is the equivalent of a police officer.  In the novel, vampires have, within the past fifty years, come out of the figurative closet.  At the end of the novel, they agree to give their relationship another shot.

This novel also comes with darkness and crime. The crime in the novel is from a series of dead vampires popping up in town. With an uneasy peace between the humans and vampires, these murders bring the tension between the two races to new heights. The humans almost forced the vampires out of town, which is just because these murders brought up their prejudice and fear of the vampires.  Alex is also haunted by the murder of her father many years prior. She begins to see connection between her current case and her father’s murder.   In the second novel, I believe the author will reveal more information about her father.

Alex’s friend in the novel is Tasha. Tasha is the liaison between the vampire enforcers and the human police officers. Tasha is originally on the side of preserving the peace and of keeping the vampires in the city. Then with comments made by a police officer that is a public vampire hater, Tasha starts to gain a new view on vampires. This new view is about fear and distrust and causes Tasha to change evidence in the serial murder case.  This is the part of the novel about the betrayal.  This makes Tasha a very nice person to almost allow a murderer to almost kill again and get away with it (note the sarcasm).

This novel was personally not one of the better novels that I have read.  I did think that it was an okay novel. I would recommend this novel to those that like drama, romance, supernatural, and murder mysteries. Blood Law was entertaining.

Next Time in January

I am going to take a break from posting for the holidays. I will be posting again next month in January.

I finished A Hope in the Unseen written by Ron Suskind, last week on Friday.  The novel has lots of descriptions and a lot of detail was placed into the novel. I would not, personally, recommend this novel. It was not to my taste and I felt the main character was not someone that I wanted to read about. He, the main character, was too whiny in my personal opinion. Each chapter felt too long. The novel was slow and somewhat boring.

I also read and finished the novel, The Laughing Corpse written by Laurell K. Hamilton. It is a supernatural series. The Laughing Corpse is the second novel in the Anita Blake series.  The first novel is Guilty Pleasures, which I mentioned in one of my earlier posts.  I really liked this novel. I liked the building of the characters in the novel.  We are starting to see more of Jean-Claude in this novel than in the first.  I like that the author has you learn more and more about the main character, Anita, as the plot continues and as the series continues.

I started the third novel in the Anita Blake series. As I mentioned earlier, the series is in the supernatural genre.  The novel is called Circus of the Damned.  I am not quite finished reading the Circus of the Damned, but I am close to finishing.  I am enthralled by this novel. The series is very good so far and I would highly recommend if you have not read it yet.

Next time, I will be posting the reviews on two novels. The first novel is Deadworld written by J. N. Duncan.  Deadworld is haunting and dark. This sense of a haunting nature is because of the murders that occur during the novel and the main character’s past that shadows her every move.  This novel is the first in the supernatural Deadworld series.  This novel was very entertaining and I really enjoyed reading it.  I am looking forward to reading the next novel in the series.

The second novel that I will be reviewing is Ill Wind. Ill Wind is written by Rachel Caine. Rachel Caine is the author of the popular young adult Morganville Vampire series.  Ill Wind is the first novel of the Weather Warden series.  It is in the supernatural genre. The novel was a really fun read.

The Dark Light of the Day review

The Dark Light of the Day was written by Jill Archer.  This novel was published earlier this year in 2012. It is the first novel in a supernatural series. The series is called Noon Onyx novels.

The Dark Light of the Day is a dark, romantic, and supernatural novel. It is a dark novel because of its character’s haunting and mysterious pasts or beginnings. The main character, Noon Onyx, is a magic user with the Maegester powers, which is a power closely related to death. Maegesters have control over fire and demons and are always males except Noon. Noon should have been born with Mederi powers because she is a female. Noon hates that she was born differently than how she was supposed to be and she had no idea why she was different.  Noon and Peter, Noon’s best friend, try to find a book that could set Noon’s powers to how they were supposed to be.

The romance in the novel comes from two different men. One man is her best friend, Peter, and he reveals his feelings for Noon as the story goes on. Noon does have feelings for Peter but these feeling seem to be mainly friendly as the second man holds her heart. The second man is Ari Carmine, who helps Noon accept and learn how to use her powers. Noon is reluctant to talk to Ari at first, when he discovers she has the Maegester powers, but she soon began to give in and spend time with him. Ari is a bad boy, powerful, handsome, and smart.  As the novel progressed, you begin to learn how good Ari and Noon are together.

Noon believes she can not have children because she has Maegester powers, which she thinks will kill any baby she may conceive.  This is one of her major reasons for wanting to change her powers.  Noon begins to learn to accept herself and her powers as the novel goes on. She begins to realize it is not a horrible thing, if she can not change her powers to that of a Mederi.

I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys romance, the supernatural, and action in their novels. I really enjoyed reading The Dark Light of the Day. It is a spectacular novel.

Bitter Night review

Bitter Night was written by the author, Diana Pharaoh Francis. The novel was published three years ago in 2009.  Bitter Night is the first novel in the Horngate Witches series. The series is in the supernatural genre.

Bitter Night is a unique, dark and thrilling novel. The novel had drama, betrayal, friendship, adventure, astounding loyalty and the tinniest bit of romance.  The main character, Max, has an amazing sense of loyalty and friendship. She will do anything for those she considers her friends or family.  It has drama and adventure because of the fighting action and Max fighting to save her makeshift family.  Max had been betrayed several years before the start of the novel by Giselle, a witch, who she thought was her friend. I can not fully understand why Giselle would betray Max so completely. Giselle magically transformed Max to be not only stronger and faster but also a slave.  Giselle wants to save Horngate, her home, which she said she could not save without Max. The little bit of romance comes from the second main character called, Alexander, and Max.  Max saves Alexander from death and tries to help Max on her mission to save Horngate, which is where her friends were at.

Max, the main character, is incredibly bitter about Giselle’s betrayal.  Giselle not only made her a slave, but subjected her to torture, whenever Max did not bend to Giselle’s control.  Max is considered a very powerful being. Max is almost Zen like and is also learned to become detached, when she is afraid of getting hurt. She also attempts to separate herself from people so that she does not get betrayal again, like with Giselle.

The second main character is Alexander, which is Max’s future love interest. Alexander is very comfortable with these extraordinary abilities, that are magically enhanced, and he likes the society he found himself in. Max, on the other hand, hates her life and how she has ended up. She is almost suicidal in her actions and will not hesitate to place herself in dangerous situations. This might be because that she wants to be free of Giselle, but she might also want to stay alive just to kill Giselle as well. Alexander is more stable. He is more concerned with keeping his life and completing what he needs to do.

I would recommend this novel to anyone who likes drama, friendship, romance, and the supernatural. Bitter Night is chilling and dark. The novel is incredibly good and I love the depth of the characters. Bitter Night is a must read.

Next Week 12-19-12

I finished One Grave at a Time, which is written by Jeaniene Frost, late last week.  It is a funny, drama, and action filled romance. I like the close friendships in the novels.  They are a close knit group that will do almost anything for each other.  One Grave at a Time is incredibly grabbing and it is well written. The novel is a good read.

I also read Bitten and Smitten written by Michelle Rowen.  Bitten and Smitten is of the romance genre. It is drama filled and funny. The main character is a witty and sarcastic woman who has just been turned into a vampire against her will. It is a good novel to read when you are having a lazy day.  Bitten and Smitten is a good and simple novel.

I started reading The Laughing Corpse written by Laurell K. Hamilton.  The novel is an Anita Blake vampire hunter novel. The Laughing Corpse is the second novel in this series. With a new serial killer and plenty of dangerous characters after Anita, the novel is an exciting adventure and mystery. The main character, Anita, finds danger at every turn and despite this fact she always picks herself back up and gets back into the mix of things.  The first novel was very good. So far, I really am enjoying reading the second novel.

Next week I will be review two novels. One novel I will be reviewing will be the Red- Headed Stepchild and the other will be the novel Blood Law. The Red- Headed Stepchild is written by Jaye Wells. The drama and intrigue of the novel is very hooking. There is a lot of the family drama in the Red- Headed Stepchild.  The main character has to pick a side on the upcoming war between the vampire and mage races. The Red- Headed Stepchild is very entertaining.

Blood Law is written by Jeannie Holmes. The main character, Alexandra Sabian, is a vampire detective and finds a connection from the current case she is working on to the murder of her father. Alex’s ex-fiancĂ© also arrives in town at the same time. This novel is filled with drama and romance.  Alex discovers many things on her path to find justice, for both the murders that are occurring in her town and for her father.  This novel did not have any particular bad moments, but seemed to be just an okay novel.

Magic of the Bone review

Magic of the Bone is written by the author Devon Monk. Magic to the Bone is a paranormal science fiction series. It is the first novel in the Allie Beckstrom series. The series has nine novels so far.  The novel was published in 2008 and started a well written and amazing series. The plot was captivating and compelling. It grabbed my attention immediately.

The main character, Allie Beckstrom, is a tough, smart, and stubborn woman. She is emotionally a wreck, but keeps trying to start relationships, friendships, with people. Her no- nonsense attitude also helps her loose those relationships or keeps her from making them in the first place. She is emotionally damaged because of her family. Her mother left her and her father when she was young and her father does not show his love for her. He is all business and what benefits him and does not seem to care about what Allie wants. Allie works as a Hound, which is someone who tracks people based on their magical signature or just identifies whose magical signature was used for a certain spell.

Allie is working with the police at the beginning of the novel. Allie and the police have an almost uneasy peace. They get along just fine but the police seem almost weary of her. She is working on a case on the death of a little boy. She mistakenly believes it is her father’s signature which sets her on a whirlwind of events.  With each event more disastrous than the last, it was a wonder how Allie managed to end up without more lasting effects than just memory loss.

Allie meets her love interest at the beginning of the novel. His name is Zayvion and he is a very powerful magic user, which is said to be the same level as Allie, but I believe she is actually more powerful. Allie may also just be more in tuned with magic than everyone else. Zayvion is intriguing, handsome, smart, and dangerous. He is also the perfect man for Allie. She needs someone who will stick with her no matter what happens. In the novel, Zayvion helps her grow and provides a stable relationship to help her move past her childhood and her father’s cold- hearted personality.

I would recommend Magic to the Bone to anyone who likes urban fantasy novels. Those who like romance, magic, murder mysteries, family drama, or suspense should read this novel. I love this series. I just recently got the ninth novel and I still love the novels. Magic to the Bone is a must read.

Abandon review

Abandon is written by Meg Cabot.  I read Abandon a year or so ago. Meg Cabot is also the author of the famous Princess Diaries, which Disney made into two movies.  Abandon was published in 2011. It is a young adult novel and is also a series. The second novel Underworld has recently been released and I hope that one day soon I will get to read it.

Abandon is a dark and haunting novel.  The novel had a certain appeal about it that made it grab my attention and it fascinated me. Greek mythology has always fascinated me, so when I found aspects of that in this novel, it made Abandon seem even more captivating.

Abandon’s main character, Pierce, is haunted by death. She died when she was fifteen and now she can not seem to fully escape it. She was sent to an underworld, one of many that deal with the dead. This underworld was filled with confused people who filled lines, each line is supposed to tell you your destination. She ends up recognizing the man who runs the underworld, John, from her childhood.  She then ends up escaping the underworld and John returning to the living. Pierce seems to be unable to get past her time in the underworld becoming distant and withdrawn.

Pierce is trying to start over with her life when her mom decides to move to Isla Huesos, which is off the coast of South Florida, to be closer to her family. After moving to the small island, Pierce learns more information about the underworlds and about John, increasing the intrigue. Then John comes back into Pierce’s life after two years of leaving her alone. John becomes the love interest of Pierce as she learns more about him throughout the plot and he captivates her interest.

I can not wait to read second novel, Underworld. At the end of the first novel, she is back in death’s clutches, so now I want to find out what she does in the second novel. I also hope to see some development in John and Pierce’s relationship.

I would recommend this novel, Abandon, to those enjoy young adult fantasy novels. I would also recommend this novel to those who like intrigue, Greek mythology, romance, and myths about the afterlife.  Abandon is well written and an enchanting and haunting novel. I love the strength of the main character and her ability to escape the inescapable, death. Abandon is a novel that should be read and reread. The novel was an amazing read.

Next Week 12-12-12

I am officially back.  This week I will finally post my reviews on the novels Abandon, written by Meg Cabot, and Magic to the Bone, written by Devon Monk.  I know I stated that I would review these novels several weeks ago, I am sorry it took so long.

I have recently been reading the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost. The series is of the paranormal romance genre.  The humor and drama is the novel is intriguing and captivating. I am currently reading the latest of the novels, One Grave at a Time, which I like a lot so far.

I am also reading a novel called A Hope in the Unseen written by Ron Suskind. It is a nonfiction novel and is required for me to read by my AP Language and Composition teacher.  I find the plotline to be at a rather slow pace and not incredibly interesting. I do not relate to the main character at all and sometimes find him to be whiny. So far I do not care for this novel at all.

Next Week, I am going to review the novels Bitter Night and Dark Light of the Day. Bitter Night is written by Diana Pharaoh Francis. It is a supernatural fantasy novel and it is the first in the Horngate Witches series. The main character, Max, is filled with bitterness, but is also incredibly loyal to those who mean anything to her. She chooses whose side she wants to be on, in a war that could destroy everything she knows. The novel became more and more grabbing as the plot progressed.

Dark Light of the Day is written by Jill Archer. It is also a supernatural fantasy novel. The main character, Noon Onyx, struggles to accept her abilities and her very nature. She attempts to change those abilities with the help of her best friend, Peter. Noon soon learns more about her powers and learns to use them with the help of Ari Carmine. Danger and love makes Noon question who she is and who she wants to be.
