This novel has drama, has supernatural cultures and
creatures, and has romance. A lot of the
drama comes from family drama. The main character, Sabine Kane, is half vampire
and half mage. She has only ever known her vampire side of her family. The
vampire leader is her grandmother and she told Sabine her mage half did not
want her. The family drama is very
complex. Sabine has been lied to by her vampire half and they have belittled
Sabine her entire life. At the end of
the novel, she goes off to join the mages, who have opened her eyes to the
vampires’ lies.
The supernatural creatures, the mages and vampires, are on
the edge of war. Peace has always been shaky between the two species and now
that war is coming, Sabine has to pick her side. At the start of the novel, she
thought she would side with the vampires one hundred percent. As she starts to
learn more about her families past, about her parents and about what the
vampires are doing, she realizes she is on the wrong side of the coming war. She
realizes she wants to try to see what the mages are like and that is at the
very end of the novel. I really can not wait to read about Sabine and the mages
in the second novel. I want to read
about how Sabine’s relationship is with her other side of the family.
There is romance in the Red-
Headed Stepchild, at least the beginnings of romance. The romance has started between the main characters, Sabine and Adam. Adam is a mage and wants to teach Sabine how to
control and to be a mage. Adam seems good for Sabine, but the next novel should
tell more. He reveals Sabine’s family’s past to her and helps her learn that
mages are not evil people. At the end of the novel, Adam is taking her to see
her mage family.
I would recommend this novel to those that enjoy drama, a
little bit of romance, and the paranormal.
I was very entertained by the Red-
Headed Stepchild and can not wait to read the second novel.
